Bring back the QR site’s train timetables! November 3, 2009

I went to look on QR’s website for information on a train for a friend today. I always go to the QR website for train timetabling information because it doesn’t suck. It tells you what time the next train is, which platform you need to be on, how long the journey will be…
But it’s gone! There’s now a link to the USELESS translink website’s timetabling. The most unhelpful timetabling system I’ve ever seen. Who CARES what the train service is called. As if the train even says “SHIP” (for Shorncliff – Ipswich) – it says “Shorncliff”. And it also doesn’t say how long the journey will be, nor what platform you need to be on.
QR! Bring back your timetable to your website!

I’ve previously posted about whether toilet paper should be hung over or under. I found this post today which has helpful diagrams that support my arguments. Nuff said.

The latest post from PopCap – the makers of the most fabulous Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook reads as follows
Wow – everyone must really be enjoying the new Bejeweled Blitz! Over 90 million games have been played in the last 24 hours. For Pete’s sake people, take a bathroom break once in a while…
(can you tell I am one of those people who have not taken a bathroom break? ;) )
Using Googles Search Results October 3, 2009

I recently had the opportunity to observe another person’s behaviour with a set of google’s search results.
He had approached a friend with a question and said that he could only find lots of results of other people who also had the same problem – he had not yet been able to find anyone who had a solution.
My suggestion was to add the word “solution” to his search terms.
I went with him to his computer and observed.
The first thing I noticed was that he specifically used the “+” feature.
While I am very aware of this feature in the search, I rarely use it, as I seem to be able to find a useful result quite often without it. I’m more likely to use the “-” feature.
The second thing I noticed was his (seeming) instant dismissal of what I would have clicked on – forum posts. True, the description of those forum threads that are displayed by the google search results are typically merely stating the problem, but often the solution is also there.
Other factors led us to leave the problem and not do further searching that evening, however, my observations of the interactions with the search results fascinated me. They showed me how differently people think and how differently they respond to the same set of information.

“Oh, save the planet, don’t use the environmentally unfriendly plastic bags, use these re-usable green bags instead.”
Which are also made of plastic. They’re non woven polypropylene. According to the wiki article, the NWPP bags can be recycled. So can the plastic bags that they’re meant to be replacing. I don’t forsee anyone thinking that they can chuck their worn out green bags into the recycling bin though. As far as I’m concerned, we’re replacing one plastic bag with another.

Hey Mister VIPTel telemarketer. Stop your bullshit. The Prime Minister of Australia did NOT give you my phone number. He wouldn’t waste his time doing that, nor would he allow someone’s privacy to be so rudely interrupted and invaded.
My request to speak to your supervisor was not licence for you to put me down and tell me that I am worthless and wasting my life.
That was the short version, and trust me, I’m gonna find someone to put an end to your antics.
[update]
I called your so-called customer care department. The lovely Veronica answered and understood where I was coming from. Well, that’s what she said, at least. There was no way I was going to add my number to your do not call list though. Not a chance. My number in your systems once is more than enough. Case closed. Til next time you call. Watch it buddy.
Then vs Than, Your vs You’re September 8, 2009

I have been seeing people use “then” instead of “than” more and more often. I’ve even seen it in the terms and conditions of a bank’s account product – it was printed!
Is it really so difficult to learn the difference between “then” and “than”?
It’s “greater than”, not “greater then”. Or, “I did X rather then Y” when it should be “I did X rather than Y”.
“your” is not the same as “you’re”. “you’re” is a contraction of “you are”. “your” is a possessive pronoun.

Or is it?
People have mentioned that the game seems slow. It may actually be slow, but if you’re fast, the game will speed up to match.
The faster you match gems, that is, the more you speed bonus you gain, the faster the gems actually move.
So, hurry up people! Play the new version even more! :D
